Soil Smiths "The Guano." Chicken Guano Pellets
Soil Smiths "The Guano." Chicken Guano Pellets
Description
What it is
20 kg of chicken pellets – as simple as that, and cheaper than the market alternative. Many would argue that this is the best fertiliser given to us by nature. If you think about it – dinosaurs were what birds evolved from – so plants had eons to get used to this “food”. It’s great for market gardens, home gardens, and on a larger scale – vineyards and top fruit.
Did you know that in the 19th century, when the human population experienced a boom, we used to wage wars over guano rich islands.
The guano-rich Chincha Islands of Peru in 1863.
It was a rich, but in effect non-renewable resource at the rate of use the world needed. Now we don’t need to. Just in the UK, just ten companies are responsible for producing 10 million tonnes of chicken manure per year. Every. Single. Year. This is enough to grow all wheat in this country with the same yield as conventional, synthetic fertilisers. We also don’t have to wage a war over it. It’s there, for the taking. In fact, if we don’t use it, it ends up polluting rivers. So, use it! 🙂
The Guano contains trichoderma spores – a beneficial fungi which helps to control disease causing fungi.
Pellet size is 4-5mm in diameter. There is a slight odour – it is normal as it’s manure. It’s a bit dusty, so mind your lungs.
Instructions for use
Best for working in the garden – outside.
Works great with The Goop. After applying, water in a suspension of Goop. It helps to deodorise the pellets and help with sending the nutrients to your plants.
It’s great to load a substrate for growing before you plant, boost after budburst or replenish after autumn harvest.
Application rates
Apply a minimum of 125 – 250 grams per m2 per year. Some other sources suggest to apply before sowing at a rate of 50-150 grams per m2 and 100-300 grams per m2 before planting. When feeding apply at 100-300 grams per m2. We leave it to your experience, as these ranges are quite generous.
